Every Last One
Anna Quindlen

In this breathtaking and beautiful novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Anna Quindlen creates an unforgettable portrait of a mother, a father, a family, and the explosive, violent consequences of what seem like inconsequential actions.  Here’s a summary of the book:

Mary Beth Latham has built her life around her family, around caring for her three teenage children and preserving the rituals of their daily life. When one of her sons becomes depressed, Mary Beth focuses on him, only to be blindsided by a shocking act of violence. What happens afterward is a testament to the power of a woman’s love and determination, and to the invisible lines of hope and healing that connect one human being to another. Ultimately, as rendered in Anna Quindlen’s mesmerizing prose, Every Last One is a novel about facing every last one of the things we fear the most, about finding ways to navigate a road we never intended to travel.

Several months ago we published the new policy regarding new book clubs. It reads as follows:

The Park Ridge Public Library reserves the right to limit the number of book clubs that it serves.

If a book club is inactive (does not order a book for 4 months), the book club will be removed from our roster and will be required to re-register at the time that the club wishes to begin receiving service from the Library. Based on availability, the club may be placed on a waiting list.

Currently we have 61 book clubs on our roster. It has gotten to the point that we can no longer accept any new book clubs. Any club who does not order within a four month period, as noted above, will be dropped from our roster. If you are a new club, you can contact us either through the blog, or you can call us at 847-720-3280. We will take a waiting list for now until we have groups leave the roster.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience and we thank all our clubs for their support.

In February, the Library launched a new, more interactive catalog. Once you are logged into your own account, you can click on the My PRPL tab to find links a variety of personalized functions from viewing your checkouts and your holds to creating lists of books and adding book reviews. You can even pay your fines online!Of course you can use it to find your favorite books, CD’s, movies and more, but now, there are interactive features which allow you to keep track of what you’ve read, what you want to read and to read reviews from professional library resources and from other readers, like you. Here’s one reader’s review of Kathryn Stockett’s The Help.

So, take a look at the new catalog by going to www.parkridgelibrary.org/ and then selecting the Search the Catalog link from the left-hand menu. Explore and have fun.

At our recent Book Club Mixer, attendees were asked to write about one of their favorite books for a chance to win a gift card to Trader Joe’s. The winner is Diane from the St. Luke’s Pageturners. Here is her entry:

Title of Favorite Book Club Book- Leap of Faith by Queen Noor.

What do you think makes this book a good choice for a book club? Provocative opinions, well expressed, though controversial for Americans. Fairly contemporary. Author is known for other activities besides writing.

What was your favorite part of the book? Her view of history in the Middle East during the 60′s and 70′s., that is, “my history”. I was alive and old enough to be aware as an adult.

Congratulations Diane!

Thanks to everyone who attended our first-ever Book Club Mixer.  We had great conversation, shared book ideas, and got to chat via Skype with author Kelly Simmons.

Enjoy this video, which shows how we get over 500 books per month to the 58 Park Ridge book clubs that we serve!

Don’t forget this Sunday, February 27 from 1-4, the Park Ridge Public Library is hosting a mixer for the 55 book clubs we serve and anyone else interested in everything book club. Hear about great new books to use with your club and find out about new book discussion trends. Don’t miss our exclusive Skype session with Kelly Simmons author of Standing Still and The Birdhouse. All this and treats to eat.

Hope to see you there,

Lynn and Valerie
